Diversity and Inclusion

First Nations, LGBTQI+, people with disabilities and people from multicultural communities are welcome at the National Debt Helpline

We welcome you

At the National Debt Helpline, we welcome people of all backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and care.

Financial counsellors assist people who are struggling with money or are unable to pay their bills or debts. They aim to provide the best support possible and understand that people need to feel safe—physically, emotionally, culturally, and socially—in order to talk freely about their problems.

Financial counsellors follow a Code of Ethics based on the values of:

  • Respect
  • Empowerment
  • Fairness
  • Privacy
  • Social justice

These values help ensure that everyone is treated with acceptance, respect, and support.

Financial counsellors are non-judgmental and are aware of the challenges people from different backgrounds may face. They are trained to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all.

 For First Nations People

The National Debt Helpline welcomes First Nations people and aims to work with you in a culturally safe and respectful way.

We’ll help you understand your options and support you in making decisions that are best for you. We want to help you take control of your financial situation and challenge unfair practices.

If you’d prefer to speak with a First Nations financial counsellor, you can call Mob Strong Debt Help at 1800 808 488. You can also ask us to connect you with a local First Nations service.

For LGBTIQ+ People

We welcome everyone who identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, intersex, or other identities. We strive to create a safe and welcoming service to address your concerns.

Financial counsellors recognise the challenges LGBTIQ+ Australians may face, including discrimination and unfair treatment, and are committed to offering inclusive and supportive services.

 For people with disabilities

We’re here to support people with disabilities. Our goal is to make sure everyone feels safe and can get the help they need.

We know that some systems and processes are hard to manage and can be unfair. We’re here to help you understand your rights, look at your options, and work through any challenges.

You can use our service in three ways:

  • Find information on this website
  • Call us on 1800 007 007
  • Use the yellow chat button on this website to chat live with a financial counsellor.

If you need extra help using our service, just let us know. We’ll do our best to support you.

 For Multicultural Communities

We welcome people from all cultures. We aim to work with you in a respectful and inclusive way. If you need an interpreter, we can provide one.

We understand that people from different cultures, especially those new to Australia, may find it hard to understand local systems. Financial counsellors are here to explain these systems, your rights, and your responsibilities to help you manage your money.
